On November 9, 2024, the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of MIT Bengaluru organized an unforgettable event titled "Hike and Heal." This initiative seamlessly blended the thrill of trekking with a meaningful clean-up drive, creating a day filled with laughter, bonding, and a shared commitment to environmental stewardship.
The day began bright and early, with 36 eager students gathering at
the college campus, buzzing with excitement. Accompanied by our
dedicated faculty members, Dr. Vinod and Dr. Alok, we embarked on our
journey to Shivaganga Hills. The atmosphere was electric; everyone was
ready for an adventure that promised not only physical activity but
also an opportunity to connect with nature and each other.
As we boarded the bus, the chatter was lively. Students exchanged
stories about past hikes, shared their expectations for the day, and
even discussed strategies for tackling the climb ahead. The
camaraderie was palpable, setting the tone for what would become a day
of unforgettable experiences.
Upon arriving at Shivaganga Hills, we were greeted by the stunning landscape that awaited us. The lush greenery and crisp mountain air invigorated our spirits as we began our ascent. The trek was challenging yet rewarding; each step brought us closer to breathtaking views that made the effort worthwhile.
As we navigated the trails, we had a delightful surprise in store: a troop of playful monkeys! These curious creatures approached us with a mix of mischief and charm, clearly hoping for a snack or two. At first, we laughed at their antics—watching them swing from branches and curiously inspect our bags. However, things took a hilarious turn when one particularly bold monkey decided to chase us!
Imagine the scene: students squealing in delight as they scramble up the path, trying to evade our furry pursuer. The sight of everyone laughing and running added an unexpected twist to our hike, turning what could have been a simple trek into a memorable adventure filled with joy.
Throughout our journey up the hill, we took several breaks to catch
our breath and soak in the stunning vistas around us. These pauses
quickly transformed into opportunities for connection and
conversation. Students sat together on rocks and logs, sharing stories
about their lives, discussing their studies, or simply enjoying each
other's company.
Some groups engaged in deep discussions about environmental issues,
while others reminisced about their favorite college memories or
shared funny anecdotes from previous events. These moments of bonding
were heartwarming; they reminded us that while we were there to serve
our community and environment, we were also building friendships that
would last beyond this day.
After reaching the summit and taking in the breathtaking views that
stretched for miles, it was time to descend and tackle our clean-up
mission. Armed with gloves and garbage bags provided by NSS, we spread
out along the trekking path. The sight of students diligently picking
up litter was inspiring; it showcased our collective commitment to
making a positive impact on our environment.
As we worked together to collect trash—plastic bottles, wrappers, and
other debris—it became clear that this initiative was more than just
cleaning; it was about taking responsibility for our surroundings. The
camaraderie continued as we joked about our findings and celebrated
small victories when we filled up bags
By the time we concluded our clean-up drive, not only had we
transformed the area into a cleaner space for future hikers, but we
had also fostered a sense of pride among ourselves regarding
environmental conservation. It was heartening to see how much
difference a group of motivated individuals could make in just a few
hours.
As we gathered for a final group photo before heading back home, there
was an overwhelming sense of accomplishment in the air. Tired but
happy faces reflected the spirit of cooperation that had defined our
day together.
The "Hike and Heal" event exemplified what NSS stands for: service,
adventure, and community spirit. We left Shivaganga Hills not only
with cherished memories of laughter and friendship but also with a
renewed commitment to caring for our planet.
This experience reminded us that while fun is essential in any
gathering, purpose adds depth to our activities. As we drove back to
campus under a setting sun painted in hues of orange and pink, we
couldn't help but feel grateful for the day's adventures—both planned
and unexpected—and excited about future opportunities to come together
as a community.
Here's to more adventures like this—where fun meet's purpose! Let's
continue to embrace opportunities that allow us to connect with nature
while fostering friendships that enrich our lives!
